Morgan also talked with the Valley Indy about efforts to give more families access to pre-kindergarten programs in the Valley, specifically in Ansonia and Derby.

According to The Valley Now: A 2015 Valley Snapshot,” in 2012, 44 percent of preschool-aged children (3 and 4 years) were not enrolled in preschool, even as slots in Valley public schools increased by 66 percent since 2002 (to 429 in 2013).

Morgan talked about how preschool is critically important to a child’s development, and how quality preschool programs prepares kids for the more rigorous curriculum now found in all modern kindergarten programs.

Money is the biggest barrier that keeps kids out of preschool, Morgan said. It helps contribute to the achievement gap in education.

But Morgan goes on to explain that Ansonia and Derby schools have been working hard to get more kids into preschool.
