DERBY — Police arrested a 17-year-old city resident on weapons charges Thursday (March 11).

The suspect’s name was not released because he is in the juvenile court system.

Police said they received a report of a verbal dispute between two people on Eighth Street at about 6:30 p.m.

When a patrol car arrived, the 17-year-old ran away, police said.

He was chased by police, including the department’s canine unit.

As police took the 17-year-old male into custody, they discovered he was in possession of a loaded, 9 mm handgun.

The teen was charged with carrying a pistol without a permit, possession of a high-capacity ammunition magazine, and interfering with police.

Police noted the teen has multiple criminal cases pending in juvenile court for allegedly stealing cars. He was supposed to be wearing an electronic monitoring bracelet, but had removed it, police said.

He was taken to a juvenile detention facility in Bridgeport. Juvenile court proceedings are not open to the public.
