DERBY — A 15-year-old male was shot in Derby Wednesday night, police said.
The teen was near the gazebo on the Derby Green at approximately 10 p.m. when a man with a gun walked up and started shooting.
The victim was hit in the lower leg. He is in stable condition at an area hospital.
In a statement Thursday morning, police noted there was a group of young people on the Green who were fired upon.
“There were several juveniles on the Derby Green at the time of the incident and police are investigating if the injured juvenile was the intended target. Police located multiple bullet casings on the adjacent street. These were located approximately 50 yards from the area on the Green where the juveniles were standing,” police said.
There’s no word on motive. Police have not identified a suspect (or suspects) as of Thursday morning.

Police said they were not in pursuit of a vehicle after the shooting as was reported by some citizens on social media.
A bulletin was issued to area police departments shortly after the incident regarding a vehicle seen leaving the area, but police said Thursday it hasn’t been determined whether that vehicle was connected to the shooting.
The Derby Green is bordered by Elizabeth, Fifth and Minerva streets. Police tape could be seen Wednesday night on the Minerva Street side of the Green, at the intersection of Fourth Street.
