The Justice Files: Derby Superior Court Round-Up

The court case for the accused Public Enemies bank robber was transferred Monday to Milford Superior Court, where more serious crimes are heard. 

Police said Shawn Gullberg, 26, of Shelton, allegedly robbed two Shelton banks in less than a month. He was charged earlier in July with first-degree larceny and first-degree robbery for one incident, and first-degree robbery and third-degree larceny for the second. All charges are considered felonies. 

In Gullberg’s statement, he told police he was watching a television advertisement for the Johnny Depp movie Public Enemies,” when he decided to rob the first bank, across the street from his Coram Avenue apartment. 

Gullberg is being held on a $150,000 bond and will appear in Milford Superior Court on Aug. 10. 

Plea in Annie’s Uniform Shop Burglary

The Seymour man accused of breaking into Annie’s Uniform Shop in Ansonia pleaded guilty under the Alford Doctrine in Derby Superior Court Monday.

Neil Reed, 41, of South Main Street in Seymour, was charged with third-degree burglary – a felony – second-degree criminal mischief, possession of burglary tools and fifth-degree larceny. He will be sentenced on Sept. 28 for those charges. The sentence will likely be 11 months of jail time, with three years and one month of probation, according to the terms of a plea agreement worked out between attorneys. 

According to police, Reed was video-taped trying to break into the Target store with a crow-bar on Aug. 1, 2008. 

Later that night, Annie’s Uniform Shop was broken into, and about $400 worth of merchandise and equipment was stolen. Police said surveillance video shows Reed parking outside the store that night, and in a search warrant of his home, police found specific scissors that were reported stolen from the store that night.

The store owner reported about $400 in stolen goods and $500-$600 in damage. 

Blue Light Special

Brian Koskelowski, the Seymour volunteer firefighter who was arrested by state police for allegedly using his emergency blue lights to attempt to pull over another driver on Route 8, was scheduled to appear in Derby Superior Court for the charges Monday, but was not in court. 

His attorney, Edward Giacci of Shelton, did not return calls for comment Monday afternoon. According to a clerk in the court, the matter was registered as pending” Monday afternoon. 

It was not clear Monday when Koskelowski would appear next. 

State police arrested Koskelowski July 1 for criminal impersonation, reckless driving and use of unauthorized colored or white lights.
