The Naugatuck Valley Health District reported Thursday that 1,649 people in the lower Naugatuck Valley have tested positive for the COVID-19 virus since March.
The health district covers Ansonia, Beacon Falls, Derby, Naugatuck, Seymour and Shelton.
The total number of cases increased by 28 since June 4. The number of positive tests is up by 389 cases since May 11.
Since March Shelton had 562 cases, the most in the immediate area. The number of positive test results is up by seven since a week ago.
Naugatuck has 371 cases total, up five from last week.
Ansonia has experienced 273 positive tests, up from 265 a week ago.
Seymour has experienced 227 cases as of June 11, up four from June 4.
Derby had 168 cases as of June 11, up two since last week.
Beacon Falls has 48 cases, up two from a week ago.
The data released daily from the health district doesn’t include information on hospitalizations or recoveries.
Since March, 191 people locally have died COVID-19 associated deaths, according to the health district. An additional 31 deaths have been classified as probable COVID-19 associated deaths.
Deaths per town:
Ansonia: 5 (plus two probable)
Beacon Falls: 0
Derby: 3
Naugatuck: 34 (with three probable)
Seymour: 40 (with five probable)
Shelton: 109 (with 21 probable)
Of the 191 laboratory-confirmed COVID deaths, 171 have been people living in nursing homes, assisted living facilities, group homes, or similar settings. Locally, there are nursing homes in Shelton, Seymour and Naugatuck, which is why the deaths there are higher than Ansonia and Derby (where three nursing homes have closed since 2009).
Since so many people are dying in nursing homes from COVID-19, Gov. Ned Lamont this week said the state would hire an independent group to review the preparations and actions taken within the facilities, The CT Mirror reported.
