The Power Went Out, Then It Came Back

About 6,100 United Illuminating customers in Ansonia and Derby lost power for about an hour Tuesday (July 9).

The outage started about 2:40 p.m. and was mostly over by 3:40 p.m.

UI spokesman Edward Crowder said the problem was traced to a problem at a substation at 3 Riverside Drive in Ansonia.

It looks like there was a glitch in the transmission system that caused that substation to shut down. We’re still trying to figure out what happened,” Crowder said.

The power failure was wide spread in Ansonia, as reported by readers of the Valley Indy Facebook page.

Ansonia’s commercial centers on Main Street, Pershing Drive and parts of Division Street were all affected.

Ansonia police Lt. Wayne Williams said there were no power-related accidents in Ansonia during the brief outage. The power remained on at Ansonia PD.

The power failure happened as a strong thunderstorm moved through the region.

Thousands of Valley residents rode out the power failure on the Valley Indy Facebook page.
