There is plenty to do in the Valley this weekend.

SATURDAY, MAY 28
- No Vet Left Behind Warrior Spirit Road March and Vietnam Vigil
The event runs from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Click here to download a PDF flier for the event.
Participants will march more than six miles carrying packs of canned food to donate.
Adults will carry 50-pound packs, and youths and seniors will carry 12-to-25-pound packs.
The march starts at the Derby greenway, heads towards downtown Ansonia to the No Vet Left Behind thrift shop.
From there participants march back toward Derby and end up at the Shelton Memorial Park at the Shelton Riverwalk.
- Pug Playgroup
Bring your small dog to the Shelton Dog Park to meet new friends.
Every Saturday from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. there is a small dog playgroup in the small dog park. Bring your Pug, Puggle, Jug (Jack Russell and Pug Mix) or other small breed along for this fun canine playgroup event.

- St. Joseph School Carnival
430 Coram Ave, Shelton
Saturday is the last night of the carnival. 6 p.m. to 11 p.m.
- Shelton High School Redeemable Can and Bottle Drive
Sponsored by the SHS Marching Gaels
Shelton High School Marching Band, Color Guard and Pompons are holding a redeemable bottle and can drive on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Shelton High School bus loop at 120 Meadow St.
All donations go directly to the groups to fund their competitions.
- Friends of the Seymour Library Book and Bake Sale
10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Visit the friends of the Seymour Public Library used book and bake sale. Homemade baked goods and goodies are sold upstairs in the lobby while downstairs in the friends’ room special deals are being made on used books.

- Boy Scout Bottle Drive
Help Boy Scout Troop 55 fund their summer trip to Tennessee by dropping off cans/bottles.
Please drop off in bins, located at 97 Blueberry Lane, at any time. Scheduled pickups can also be arranged.

SUNDAY, MAY 29
- Seymour Memorial Day Parade
Gets underway at 11:30 a.m., following a route from French Memorial Park to the Seymour Community Center on Pine Street, winding through downtown Main Street.
It will be preceded by an 11 a.m. Memorial Day service with veterans at the parade viewing stand on Main Street, at the train station.
- Civil War Encampment
At the Seymour Historical Society, 59 West Street, immediately following the parade (roughly 12:15 p.m. to 3 p.m.)
The public is invited to visit modern-day members of Company F, 14th Connecticut Volunteer Infantry, Inc., which will hold a Civil War encampment at the society.
Learn about the life of a Civil War soldier, how battlefield food was prepared, and the history of the unit that participated in 34 battles.
The soldiers and civilians will appear rain or shine.
- Ansonia Memorial Day Parade
The parade will take place Sunday, May 29 at 2 p.m., starting at Nolan Field and proceeding along Wakelee Avenue, Jackson Street, the Main Street reviewing stand at City Hall and ending at the Big Y Shopping Plaza.
A ceremony honoring veterans will be conducted in front of City Hall to honor the veterans and former Ansonia Mayor and Air Force Veteran, Lester Hale.
There will be shuttle bus service starting at noon from the parking lot at Naugatuck Savings Bank in the Big Y shopping plaza.
- Veteran Memorial Service
7:30 p.m., Shelton High School
Families of all veterans who passed away since last Memorial Day from Derby and Shelton are invited and each family receives a flower of remembrance. Shelton Police Sgt. Orville Smith will be one of the veterans remembered during the service. Keynote speaker is Colonel Michael Casey of the Connecticut Army National Guard.
MONDAY, MAY 30
- Derby-Shelton Memorial Day Parade
The parade starts at 9 a.m. at Cottage and Elizabeth Street in Derby.
It travels down Elizabeth Street, then turns right on Main Street before turning left onto the Derby-Shelton bridge. There will be a brief ceremony on the bridge.
The parade continues into Shelton by making a right on onto Howe Avenue, a left onto White Street. It will pass through Coram and Center streets before heading back to Howe Avenue.
- The Emil Senger Post 10 Memorial Day Services
Starts at 9 a.m. on the Bank Street Bridge, casting a wreath in horn and memory of veterans lost at sea.
Services will resume at 10 a.m. at Veteran’s Grove at French Memorial Park to honor the war dead.
Participation is open for all veterans groups, as well as the public.
- Oxford Memorial Day Parade
Parade kicks off Monday at 11 a.m.
Follows a route from the Pleasant Valley Shopping Center on Echo Valley Road down Route 67 to the Town Hall.
- Memorial Day 5k Freedom Run
Takes place in Oxford at 8 a.m.
The race starts at the Oxford Town Hall, 486 Oxford Road and goes south on Route 67 to the Pleasant Valley Shopping Center and back to Town Hall.
The course has been USATF certified.
All net proceeds will go to the Veterans. Walkers are also welcome to participate in the two mile fitness walk.
The cost to participate is $20 per person if you register in advance. If you prefer to register at the event on the day of the race, the cost will be $25. Veterans and active military personnel may participate for free. Wheelchairs and baby joggers are also welcome.
