PINWHEELS FOR PEACE
Oxford Girl Scouts will be planting pinwheels with messages for peace on the lawn in front of Oxford Town Hall.
Pinwheels for Peace is an art installation project started in 2005 by two Art teachers, Ann Ayers and Ellen McMillan, of Coconut Creek, Florida, as a way for students to express their feelings about what’s going on in the world and in their lives.

Rededication Of The Monuments Of PFC Frank P. Witek
The monuments have been beautifully refurbished with laser etching in black granite stone and decorative lighting added to the surrounding grounds.
PFC Witek died fighting in World War II fighting the Japanese in Guam. He received the Medal of Honor for his sacrifice. The monuments in his honor were stolen last year.

Presented by New Haven Symphony Orchestra. Aimed at pre K‑through second graders
Sponsored by the Derby Public Library thanks to a grant from the Valley Community Foundation.
The Derby Public Library is pleased to host a series of children’s music programs presented by the New Haven Symphony Orchestra called Creating Musical Readers.
Literacy and music combine in this program geared for pre‑K to 2nd graders.
NHSO musicians bring musical stories to life as they read to students and their instruments become a part of the story. 
The first book to be read will be Ralph’s Secret Weapon” featuring a musical instrument called the bassoon.
Registration is required.

EXPLORE THE NAUGATUCK!
A day-long bicycle tour from Torrington to Derby will celebrate the selection of the greenway as an America’s Great Outdoors (AGO) project by the Department of Interior.
Explore the Naugatuck! will highlight existing trails, recreational access to the river and promote the big-picture vision of what this greenway can be some day. A core group of cyclists will ride the entire route, to be joined in each town and city by local riders.
Local stops include Beacon Falls, Seymour and Derby.

Firefighter Poker Run
The Renegade Knights Firefighter M. C. – Battalion 2 chapter is hosting its 2nd Annual Poker Run Sunday, September 23, 2012.
Proceeds from the event are donated to fire victims in the Naugatuck Valley area.
The starting point will be the Tri-Town Plaza at 814 Derby Avenue, off Exit 19 of Route 8.
Registration starts at 9 a.m. and closes at 11 a.m.
The end point will be at the Catholic War Veterans building at 112 Derby Avenue in Derby.

Full of unique arts and crafts, with over 110 vendors expected to attend. There will also be food, rides, and children’s contests. Please visit our pick of the patch:” a raffle showcase of crafts.
