Eel In Water Pipe
DERBY — A long eel got into the water pipes in Howard & Barber’s store and caused trouble. The eel had worked its way to the meter on the elevator and, in trying to get through, had been chopped up by the wheels within pretty badly.
Memorial Day Exercises
DERBY — Arrangements have been made to hold the exercises in the Sterling Opera House on Sunday evening. The Sons of Veterans have decorated the opera house.
Hole In Sidewalk
DERBY — There is a hole in the sidewalk in front of Dodge’s restaurant on Main Street which caused several people to stumble and receive an unexpected shaking up Friday afternoon.
MONDAY, MAY 28
In Memory Of The Dead
DERBY — A very large audience gathered at the Sterling Opera House on Sunday evening to attend the supplementary Memorial services. It was the largest gathering that has attended Memorial services in Derby for some years.
Stole A Gold Watch
DERBY — Jimmie Forbes, the 13-year-old son of Frank Forbes of Third Street, got into trouble last week by taking a lady’s gold watch and chain from a room in the rear of Joe Killmartin’s shoe shop. It was the attempted sale of the articles that led to locating the person who took it.
Catch Basin Dirt
DERBY — Street Commissioner McManus claims that an injustice was done to him last Friday when he was accused of ordering smelly dirt to be removed from a catch basin and spread onto Olivia Street to repair damage. The dirt wasn’t from the catch basin.
TUESDAY, MAY 29

DERBY — Dr. C.T. Baldwin called the Sentinel office to complain again about city workers spreading smelly dirt from a catch basin on Olivia Street. He worried about the impact the odors could have on citizen health.
New Grocery Business
DERBY — An unnamed businessman is now selling groceries as part of a “club.” He buys the goods from an outfit in Chicago at low prices. The Sentinel did not include information on how people join the club.

DERBY — Kamak’s Bargain House at 181 – 183 Main St. was selling bed bug destroyer for just 20 cents a box!
East Side Hoodlums
DERBY — The gang of hoodlums who hang around the Mansion house in east Derby have been making things lively for some time now. They begin their fun at about 9 o’clock and continue to make the section hideous with their shouting and cursing until the small hours of the morning.
