Friday, August 5, 1921

Websters Win
ANSONIA – The Websters defeated the Eagles yesterday afternoon in the first game of the series between the two companies in the Firemen’s league at Pioneer Field. The score was 9 to 1, the Websters securing six runs in the first inning and three in the seventh. The lone count of the Eagles was made in the eighth.

Board To Meet
DERBY – The Board of Aldermen is to hold its regular August meeting tonight. It is expected that a number of matters will come up for consideration. 

Still Looking
SEYMOUR – No trace has been found by the police of the burglars who entered the men’s furnishing store of Carl Rogel on Bank Street Monday night, and walked with clothing and other articles. The police have been busy on the burglary, and it was said today that they expected within a few days to have the burglars. While not made known by the police, it is said that the work was that of three local youths and was not the work of strangers. The local men are said to be missing ever since the burglary. 

Saturday, August 6, 1921

Boys Make Trouble
ANSONIA – The police have been asked to look after a gang of boys who congregate at the Elm Street green and throw stones and damage adjoining property. The Elm Street school property has suffered with others, and unless the youngsters change their ways, they will land in the city court. 

Tough Luck
DERBY – It was a tough day around the police station yesterday. Earl in the morning, Officer Degnan and Manion traveled to the Shepaug River by automobile to catch enough bass for all the force, but returned empty handed. Yesterday afternoon, Janitor John O’Dell went blackberrying up by the Scarvone place pm Great Hill Road and came back, after several hours’ hard work, with less than four quarts of berries. 

New School Ready
SEYMOUR – The new high school building on Pine Street will be completed early next week. This announcement was made today by some of the school officials. Practically all of the work has been done to the building and all that remains to be given attention is some decorating work.

Chief On Vacation
ANSONIA – Chief O’Donnell left Sunday on his annual vacation which will be spent at his cottage at Walnut Beach, where other members of the family have been summering. Sergeant John Mahoney will have charge of the police department during the absence of the chief. 

New Awning
DERBY – A new awning was raised today over the front of the department store of Freedman and Greenberg on Main Street, being one of the largest in the city,

Auto Blocks Trolley
SEYMOUR – A large touring car met with an accident this morning, which blocked traffic on Main Street for a time. The car bore a New York license number and was headed south, having just come from Waterbury. As it neared the upper subway, the front axle of the car snapped. At the time the automobile was on the tracks of the Connecticut company. There were five passengers in the auto, none of whom were injured. The trolley car, scheduled to leave for the south at 10:35 o’clock was held up for nearly half an hour. After jacking the automobile up, it was removed from the tracks to one of the local garages for repair. 

Tuesday, August 9, 1921

Machine Gun Drill
ANSONIA – The machine gun company will hold a drill this evening. Members of the company are requested to appear at 8 o’clock in O.D. uniforms without blouses. A meeting of the association will be held after the drill.

New Store
DERBYYe Art Shop” has been opened at 39 Elizabeth Street by the Misses Carmen Peterson and Viola Wilson. Dry goods and other lines will be carried by the young women who expect to make a success of the venture.

Parish Outing
SEYMOUR – Quite a number of tickets were claimed yesterday afternoon at St. Augustine’s hall by the children who are to attend the annual parish outing and Sunday school picnic on Friday at Lighthouse Point. Indications point to a large number attending the event, which is being directed by a number of ladies of the parish.
