Tuesday, Jan. 8, 1929

Many Mourn Death of ex-Mayor Mead
ANSONIA — The city hall, public and parochial schools and public library will be closed tomorrow as a mark of respect to ex-Mayor John C. Mead. The funeral of Mr. Mead will be held from the family home at 71 Elm street at 9 o’clock with services at the Church of the Assumption at 10 o’clock. Burial will be at Mt. St. Peter’s cemetery.

Another Logan Grocery
DERBY — A new Logan Brothers grocery store is soon to occupy the confectionary store formerly conducted by James Forbes at the corner of Sixth and Elizabeth street, according to signs posted in the window of the new vacant store.

Jeweler Bankrupt
DERBY — Jacob Schancupp, Main street jeweler, entered a plea of bankruptcy in the United States bankruptcy court in New Haven yesterday. He has liabilities of over $44,000 and assets of slightly over $35,000.

Two Aviators Pass Over Castle Rock
SEYMOUR — Two airplanes that passed over the town shortly after 11 o’clock today caused much excitement to the people in the eastern section, as it was thought that one of the planes made a forced landing on the west side of Castle Rock. So sure were a number of people that this was so that telephones became busy at once, and people residing on that side of the mountain were looked to for information. While appearances indicated the landing of one of the two planes, it was found that such was not the case.

Wednesday, Jan. 9, 1929

Roast Pork Supper
ANSONIA — The men of Christ Church parish will give a roast pork supper tomorrow evening between 6 and 7 o’clock in the church parish house. The public is invited to attend.

Oldest Resident of Derby Dies
DERBY — Miss Louise Howell Gilbert, daughter of one of the prominent pioneer families of Derby and its oldest resident, died at the nursing home of Mrs. Olivia C. Affleck, 165 Minerva street, yesterday after an illness of about two weeks. Aged 90 years and 10 months, Miss Gilbert was the youngest of the 15 children of Deacon Truman and Anna (Smith) Gilbert, and was named for Rev. Louis D. Howell of the First Congregational church. 

Traffic Lights are Working Well
SEYMOUR — The automatic traffic signal light at the corner of Main and Bank streets, which was installed there several months ago, is working out exceedingly well. According to statements made by some of the town officials, the signal is doing even better work than expected and they regard it as an exceptionally good investment.

Thursday, Jan. 10, 1929

Christmas Cruise
ANSONIA — Among those who returned to New York aboard the Cunard line steamship Franconin” from the Christmas cruise to the West Indies and the Panama Canal was Miss May Allingham of Jackson street. 

Milk Truck Hit by Car
DERBY — A Chevrolet delivery truck used by the Ansonia and Derby Dairy company started up while the driver was delivering milk and struck a machine, an Essex coach, owned by Howard Snow of Yonkers street which was coming up Olivia street yesterday afternoon. The Essex machine was slightly damaged.

Repainting Office

DERBY — Fayden & McCabe, local painting contractors, yesterday applied the first coat of paint to the ceiling of the office of City Clerk James S. Donahue. The second coat will be given in a few days.

Friday, Jan. 11, 1929

Ready for Police Ball

ANSONIA — It is expected that at least 1,000 people will wend their way into the opera house tonight on the occasion for the first annual ball of the Ansonia police department. The affair, which will last from 8 30 o’clock in the evening to 2 o’clock in the morning, promises to be a merry one as the police have made elaborate arrangements.

Gets New Desk Set
DERBY — A handsome new desk set, inscribed with his name, has been presented to Peter J. McIntyre, new tax collector and superintendent of charities by Oates Brothers Trucking company, his former employer.

New Directories Here
SEYMOUR — The new telephone directories for the local district, furnished by the Southern New England Telephone Company, were distributed throughout the town today. The directories are to go into use after midnight tomorrow night.

Saturday, Jan. 12, 1929

Karg is Named for Public Works Board
ANSONIA — William Karg, president of the board of aldermen, was named by Mayor Michael J Cook today as a member of the board of public works.

Given Second Coat
DERBY — Fayden & McCabe, local painting contractors, yesterday gave the walls and ceiling of the city clerk’s office a second coat of paint, greatly improving the appearance of the office.

Troop 3 Derby Meeting
DERBY — Troop 3 Derby held its usual meeting at Scout headquarters last Friday. The meeting opened with the flag ceremony with the singing of The Star Spangled Banner,” and the repeating of the Scout laws, motto and slogan.

Arranging Card Party
SEYMOUR — The Ladie’s Aid Society of the German Lutheran church is planning for a card party that will take place Thursday evening next at the home of Mrs. Grele on Cherry street.
