Ex-mayor Sheasby, 73, dies
ANSONIA – William T. Sheasby, 73, a former mayor, died Friday in Atlanta after a long illness.
Sheasby was born Sept. 15, 1917 in Ansonia, the son of the late George and Nora V. O’Brien Sheasby. He served two terms as the city’s Republican mayor from 1952 to 1956.
It was during his tenure that the catastrophic flood of 1955 swept through the Naugatuck Valley. After the disaster, Sheasby was appointed by Gov. Abraham Ribicoff to the Connecticut Flood Recovery Committee.
Robbery Probed
DERBY – Police are investigating a robbery at the Coin-Op Laundry in The Plaza on the Green. Several video games and change machines were broken into and approximately $25 in cash taken.
Seniors To Hold Holiday Party
SEYMOUR – The Seymour Senior Center will hold its annual Christmas party at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Grassy Hill Lodge, Derby. Mildred Nelson, director, said reservations can be made by calling or stopping at the center in Annex School by Monday. There will be dancing to the music of the Russ Perun Orchestra.

City Schools Mark Holidays
ANSONIA – Holiday programs begin this week in the public schools.
Christmas caroling at the Ansonia Mall will feature the Willis School chorus on Friday at 11 a.m. under the direction of music teacher Matthew Puzzo. This morning, shoppers were entertained by Mead School second graders, under the direction of music teacher Claudia Csuka.
A holiday fair began today and runs through Thursday at Mead School. The sixth graders at Prendergast School will hold a dance Friday immediately after the end of classes.
ACT Up Over Gift From Doc
DERBY – Area Congregations together, which is struggling to raise money, has gotten a shot in the arm with the gift of a $500 shopping spree at a local supermarket.
Dr. Valentine Deduk, medical director at Griffin Hospital, recently donated the $500 shopping spree at Klarides Supermarkets to the church group, which runs Spooner House, the Valley’s only homeless shelter.
ACT also runs a food bank which supplies smaller programs run by Valley churches.
Motorists Charged
SEYMOUR – Three motorists were charged with exceeding the posted speed limits on Maple Street and Roosevelt Drive by a radar surveillance patrol monitoring unit Tuesday. One other driver was charged with passing in a no-passing zone on Derby Avenue.
Smoke Reported
SEYMOUR – Citizens Engine Co. responded to an alarm from box 55 at 9:04 p.m. Tuesday to investigate the report of smoke in a house at 8 Rocky Glen. Firefighters were unable to find the source of the smoke.

Flaherty Heads Board For 6th Term
ANSONIA – Second ward alderman Bartholomew R. Flaherty, Jr. was unanimously elected president of the Board of Aldermen for his sixth consecutive term during the group’s organizational meeting Tuesday in City Hall.
“Bart is an effective leader who remains calm and understanding when dealing with problems,” said first ward alderman Maureen I. Bennett. “Bart is involved, he’s willing to take on the tough jobs and look at the facts, never jumping to conclusions or onto any bandwagons.”
Fundraiser To Aid Toys For Tots
DERBY – There will be a fundraising party for Training, Education and Manpower, Inc’s Toys for Tots program from noon to 2 p.m. Dec. 15 at Smile Dental Center, 61 Elizabeth St., Derby. Dr. Bruce Sofferman, who is sponsoring the event, hopes to raise about $10,000 for the program, which provides Christmas gifts for children form low-income families.
All who attend are asked to bring a new, unwrapped toy for a boy or a girl. Monetary contributions also are accepted.
Brush Fire
SEYMOUR – Citizens Engine Co. was called out at about 11:15 p.m. Monday for a brush fire off Moss Avenue.
At 5 p.m., Great Hill Hose Co. responded to a call at Balance Rock Condominiums for a downed high voltage electrical wire, Fire Chief John Cronin said. Firefighters stood by while a Northeast Utilities crew made repairs.

Grid Banquet Set For Red Raiders
DERBY – The city of Derby will honor the 1990 Derby High School football team, the No. 1 ranked team in the state, and CIAC State Class S and Housatonic League champions, at a banquet on Feb. 24 at 1 p.m. at Actor’s Colony Inn, Seymour.
The committee, of which Mayor Richard Grande is honorary chairman met Monday night at City Hall and voted to present each member of the team with a state championship ring.
Christmas Lunch
SEYMOUR – The Garden Club will meet at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the home of a member for a Christmas luncheon, gift exchange and business meeting.
Committee members in charge of arrangements are Mary Lou Narowski, Jeanette Hoffert, Sandy Zwick and Nadia Small.
Club members have recently added 100 tulip bulbs to Fran Sutton Memorial Garden at the Seymour Library.
Holiday Décor Contest Will Be Held Sunday
SEYMOUR – The Skokorat Area Civic Association, Inc., is sponsoring its third annual holiday season house decorating contest in the neighborhood, Ann Conroy, president, said.
The residents of houses located in the northern section of the town from Route 67 to the Beacon Falls line and east of North Street are eligible to enter the competition.
Theresa Niezelski, contest chairman, said houses would be viewed and judged between 6 and 9 p.m. Sunday. Anyone who wants to have their house considered should be certain that the street number of the house is readily visible to the judges.
Awards will be given to the most outstanding decorations. Gift certificates from Klarides Supermarket and ribbons will be presented to the top entries.

Activities Planned At Ansonia Mall
ANSONIA – The Ansonia Mall will feature several holiday activities this weekend.
The “Back to the Bible Choir” will perform at 6 p.m. Thursday. The Willis School Choir will perform at 11 a.m. Friday. The SS Mary and Michael Choir and Drama Club will perform at 1 p.m. Friday and the St. Michael’s Church Choir will sing Polish and English Christmas carols at 7 p.m. that evening.
Colors the Clown will be at the mall from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday. The Connecticut Chords, the quartet that won the 1989 State Barbershop Quartet Championship, will perform at 11 a.m.
The Gruppet Puppets will be back at 2 p.m. Sunday after a “Sundae with Santa” program 1 to 2 p.m.
Photos with Santa will be available through Christmas.
Santa’s In Derby To Talk To Kids
DERBY – Santa Claus is coming to town.
Mayor Richard A. Grande said the Olde Derby Day Committee is sponsoring visits with Santa at the former Howard and Barber building on Main Street from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Fridays and from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays until Christmas.
“The children are welcome to come down for some free Christmas goodies,” Grande said. “For a fee, they can have pictures taken with Santa by a local photographer.”
Grande said the city’s annual Christmas tree lighting will take place at 6 p.m. Friday at City Hall.
Middle School Donates $500
SEYMOUR – The Seymour Middle School participated in the 1990 Lights of Love holiday fundraising campaign to benefit the Ronald McDonald House in New Haven, donating $500 through the efforts of the Student Council.
Delegates from the school took part in a tree-lighting ceremony at the house Saturday and accepted a certificate of recognition for the school’s support. The school’s contribution represented proceeds from a bake sale sponsored by the Student Council.
