Monday, April 29, 1929

Boy Scout Hike

ANSONIA – The Boys Scouts of Troop 2 will meet at their headquarters in the Congregational Church Tuesday morning at 8:30 o’clock to go on a hike. The members are requested to be prepared with lunch and also to take along their baseball outfits, including hats, gloves, balls, etc.

Has New Truck

DERBY – Herman Litsky, proprietor of the Derby Feed Store at the corner of Main and Caroline streets, has purchased a new international motor truck. The vehicle is a powerful and capacious one and Mr. Litsky will be able to make larger and more frequent deliveries.

Small Chimney Fire

DERBY – A small fire in the chimney of a house at 57 Commerce Street brought out the fire department on the sounding of an alarm late yesterday afternoon. The firemen extinguished the blaze with chemicals, little damage being done.

Many Dogs Registered

SEYMOUR – With only two more days in which to register dogs, business started in briskly at the Office of the Town Clerk this morning. Many of the canines were registered during the day and it looks now as though the number to be registered would compare favorably with that of last year.

Jolly Six Meet

ANSONIA – The regular meeting of the Jolly Six was held last evening with a full attendance of members. The award on the ladies’ silver manicure set took place, J. Hallot of Crescent Street securing the prize. Business of interest to the members was transacted, and it was announced that the club has obtained enough money for the Sea Scouts of American for Memorial Day.

Card Social Tomorrow

ANSONIA – A card party will be held in Deutscher Verein Hall tomorrow evening by the Ladies Auxiliary of the Deutscher Verein. The affair will commence at 8:15 o’clock and after playing, apple cake and coffee will be served.

Takes An Appeal

DERBY – Joseph Molloy of Maple Avenue, who was sentenced to six months in the county jail yesterday by Judge Ralph H. Clark of the city court, after being found guilty with Frank Keefe of the theft of an automobile Sunday evening, filed notice of appeal to the Superior Court and furnished a bond of $1,000. Keefe was taken to jail yesterday to begin serving his term.

$35,000 In Taxes Taken Yesterday

DERBY – Tax Collector Peter McIntyre reported today that yesterday was the biggest day he has experienced since he took charge of the office. Approximately $35,000 was taken in, in taxes during the day. 

Successful Food Sale

SEYMOUR – The food sale held yesterday afternoon by the April Ways and Means committee of the Auxiliary of the American Legion was most successful in every way. The sale was held at the store of the Connecticut Light & Power Co., commencing at 3 o’clock and continued throughout the afternoon. With the sale of food, there was a demonstration of baking which was interestingly watched by all.

Table Not Returned

ANSONIA –Announcement was made today that some person who loaned a card table for the recent affair conducted by the Ansonia High School Alumni Association had done so without giving their name, and the committee is unable to return the table, a felt top one. If the owner will call 2574, it will be returned.

Many Attended Game

DERBY – A number of Derby people were among the hundreds of baseball fans who attended the Holy Cross-Yale baseball game yesterday afternoon at Yale Field. Most of the Derby fans were rooting for Holy Cross and had much to tell of the 1 to 0 victory over Yale.

D.A.R. Celebrates 35th Anniversary

SEYMOUR – The thirty-fifth birthday celebration of the Sarah Ludlow chapter D.A.R., which was held yesterday, proved to be a very delightful affair. A luncheon was served in the Congregational Church dining room at 1 o’clock. The Young Women’s Bible Class of the church served a delicious luncheon. Tables were arranged in the form of a Maltese cross and decorated with white flowers and blue May baskets, making the colors of the D.A.R.

Joe King Wins

ANSONIA – Joey King, amateur flyweight boxer of this city, won a lively fight from Dan McCoy of Philadelphia last night at the New Haven arena. The bout, which was one of three rounds, was filled with action and King showed up exceptionally well. His punching was steady and accurate and although McCoy put up a stubborn resistance, he found the Ansonia fighter a little good for him.

Storm Firemen Met

DERBY – The Storm Engine Company members held their regular meeting last night in their rooms on Elizabath Street. Memorial Day plans were made, and routine business discussed.

To Teach In Maine

SEYMOUR – Superintendent of Schools R. C. Clark has received an invitation to teach in the Washington State Normal School in Machias, Maine from July 8th to August 16th. Mr. Clark will teach three classes-classroom organization and management, social studies methods and school and community problems.

Gun Club Shoot

SEYMOUR – The Seymour Gun Club will hold a shoot tomorrow afternoon at the range at Pepe’s Farm. The club now has 350 members. The shoot will start at 1:30 o’clock.
