ANSONIA — A stakeout in the city’s north end resulted in three people being arrested on drug charges.
City police said they conducted a surveillance operation in the north end with officers from the federal Drug Enforcement Agency out of New Haven on Tuesday (June 27). Police said the effort was meant “to address quality of life, drug and weapons issues.“
Ansonia police Lt. Patrick Lynch said the operation was in response to numerous complaints from the public about drug dealing in the area.
At about 2 p.m. law enforcement said they approached a vehicle after watching “multiple drug transactions.” The vehicle was in a parking lot on North Main Street near Fourth Street.
Cops detained the people in the car and identified them as Tremaine Cox, 22, of Derby; Kyree Pettway-Coverson, 24, of Ansonia, and; Jeremiah Perkins, 25, of Waterbury.
Police said Pettway-Coverson had multiple folds of heroin in his lap.
Cox had powdered cocaine and crack cocaine in his possession, along with a handgun with a valid permit, police said.
Police said they found heroin, cocaine, fentanyl, a digital scale, and packaging material inside the car, which was registered to Perkins.
Cox was charged with three counts of possession of a controlled substance; three counts of intent to distribute narcotics; sale of narcotics, and; possession of drug paraphernalia. He was released on a $100,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on July 11 in Derby.
Pettway-Coverson was charged with three counts of possession of a controlled substance; three counts of intent to distribute narcotics, and; possession of drug paraphernalia. He is due in court on June 28.
Perkins was charged with three counts of possession of a controlled substance; three counts of intent to distribute narcotics, and; possession of drug paraphernalia. He was released on a $50,000 bond and is due in court on July 11.
Police said they seized 268 folds of heroin, fentanyl and cocaine, $890 in cash and the Glock handgun.
Police also said they arrested Pettway-Coverson the day prior, but that he had posted a $4,000 bond in connection to that arrest.
According to Lynch, Ansonia Police Officer Joel Perez stopped Pettway-Coverson’s vehicle at about 4 p.m. on Monday (June 26) after he allegedly ran two red lights near Main, Maple and North Main streets. Police said Pettway-Coverson fled the scene, nearly causing several crashes as he sped away.
His car was later found unoccupied in a residential neighborhood — with crack cocaine inside.
“A few hours after the stop Pettway-Coverson came to the police department to turn himself in,” Lynch said.
Pettway-Coverson was charged with possession of a controlled substance, reckless driving, operating an unregistered vehicle without insurance or a valid license, two counts of running a red light, and interfering with police. Pettway-Coverson’s license had been previously suspended, police said.
