Three New Businesses Coming To Ansonia’s Main Street

Three storefronts along Ansonia’s Main Street are being renovated to make room for new tenants.

Millie’s II, a luncheonette with deep Valley roots, closed in October. The space at 242 Main St. will be reborn as Kaptan Pizza,” Hasan Koch, the pizzeria’s owner, told the Valley Indy Thursday (March 14).

The new pizzeria should be open by the end of the month, Koch said.

Koch already owns a Kaptan Pizza in Seymour, along with Whittemore Ice Cream. He lives in Ansonia.

I’ve lived here for 16 years,” Koch said. It was an empty space, I saw the opening and wanted it.”

Koch is renting the space from Iglesia Cristiana Rosa De Saron, Inc., a Christian group that owns the building and has a church on the first floor.

The Kaptan Pizza in Seymour will remain open.

Cafe 252

Extensive renovations are also underway next door at 252 Main St. in the space that formerly housed Custom Shoppe Upholstery, a shop that relocated to Wakelee Avenue.

Cafe 252: The Valley Gourmet Eatery, will open by the end of April, according to Maurizio Clemente, who owns the building and the new eatery.

Clemente is also renovating two rental apartments on the building’s second floor.

Clemente is from Westchester County, N.Y. and has been in the construction business for 25 years. Before that he worked in a pizzeria.

He’s looking at his Main Street business as a return to his roots. He promises to bring New York flair to his food.

I’ve been looking for places all around Connecticut, in Fairfield County,” Clemente said. The people of Ansonia are very nice. I can see myself being part of the community here.”

Cafe 252 will be a gourmet eatery open for breakfast and lunch with freshly baked goods, he said.

Mayor James Della Volpe said when the recession hit in 2007 a lot of small businesses went under. But now they seem to be recovering.

It’s good news that small business are coming back,” Della Volpe said. It’s good news for the city of Ansonia. We are very pleased business is starting to pick up. It’s good to have the businesses and people downtown.”

Meanwhile, 240 Main St. which previously housed Valley Electric Supply, is apparently going to be a dentist’s office, according to James Tanner, the Ansonia zoning officer.

The store’s window has a large SOLD” sign in its window. Frank Hoinsky is listed as the real estate agent. He wasn’t immediately available to chat Thursday.

It’s good to see businesses come around. It’ll bring downtown to life again,” said Vinnie Scarlata, a member of the Ansonia Economic Development Commission.
