The Sarah Riggs Humphreys-Mary Silliman Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), presented the prestigious DAR Good Citizen Award to three area High School Seniors: Shelton High School – Emily Codere; Trumbull High School – Sophia Hatzis; and Derby High School – Leah Ludington. The award ceremony, attended by SRH-MS Chapter members, students, and families, took place at the Trumbull Library meeting room on March 22, 2023.
The DAR Good Citizens Award recognizes high school seniors who demonstrate the four qualities of a good citizen: Dependability, Service, Leadership and Patriotism. As part of the Good Citizen’s program, the DAR also provides a Scholarship Essay contest which the Good Citizen students can choose to participate in and which is judged at the chapter, state, and national level. The program is open to all senior class students enrolled in accredited public or private schools. The essay topic was “How will the essential actions of a good citizen (dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism) meet the challenges that America faces in this decade?” Sophia Hatzis, Trumbull High School, was our chapter winner and her essay was advanced to the State competition.
Each of these outstanding Good Citizen winners received a certificate, a Good Citizen pin, and a monetary award.
Chapter Regent Jeaneen Buchanan said she was honored to meet these outstanding young women through the DAR Good Citizen program. Committee Chair Melissa Conti presented the awards saying “Each of these students was chosen by his or her high school as consistently displaying the qualities of dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism in their curricular and extracurricular activities. The Sarah Riggs Humphreys-Mary Silliman, NSDAR Chapter applauds these fine seniors for their good citizen efforts.”
The DAR perpetuates the memory and spirit of the men and women who won American independence. The DAR is a women’s volunteer service organization that promotes education, historic preservation, and patriotism. Any woman over 18 who can prove a direct ancestor served in the American Revolution is a prospective member. For more information on the DAR visit http://www.sarahriggshumphreysDAR.org
