Torrington Upsets Seymour

Seymour bats were ice cold Tuesday during a 3 – 2 upset loss to Torrington.

I guess we weren’t focused,” Seymour coach Ken Pereiras said. We came off a big game and we may have taken them lightly.”

The big game Pereiras was referring to was Monday’s 14 – 0 victory at St. Paul. That win avenged a loss earlier this season to St. Paul.

On Tuesday, against Torrington junior righty Chelsea Matzko, Seymour’s bats were dormant.

Matzko allowed two hits, struck out three and induced seven infield popups as Torrington improved its record to 9 – 8.

Seymour dropped to 12 – 4.

We just didn’t hit today,” Wildcat junior Stephanie Burt said. I think she [Matzko] had a lot of movement on the ball. The way she threw the ball was different and her fastball was slower and hard to adjust.”

Errors hurt both teams. All five runs scored by both teams were unearned.

Seymour took a 1 – 0 lead in the bottom of the second. Juniors Emily Coyne and Kelly Mitchell walked with one out and after classmate Maggie Crocamo flied out, sophomore Gianna Alberti reached on an error and Coyne scored.

Alberti tried to take second but was tagged out before Mitchell could score.

We wanted her [Alberti] get in a rundown so the runner [Mitchell] could score but she didn’t get in a rundown,” Pereiras said.

Wildcat freshman Grace Nesbit hit a leadoff single to right in the bottom of the third. Nesbit took second on senior captain Amanda Willette’s sacrifice bunt and scored when Burt reached on an error to make it 2 – 0.

Seymour freshman righty Carissa Wasikowki pitched the first four innings and allowed one unearned run on two hits. Wasikowski struck out five and walked one.

Torrington made it 2 – 1 in the top of the fourth with one batter reaching on junior shortstop Kim Ferris’ error and other reaching on Alberti’s error at first.

Sophomore lefty Kelly Ferris relieved Wasikowski in the fifth. Ferris pitched three innings, allowed two unearned runs on one hit, walked one and struck out five.

Torrington scored twice in the first. The southpaw Ferris walked a batter and then Coyne fielded a grounder at third and overthrew first base. Torrington senior Kelly McDonnel (3 – 3) then slammed a two-run double to give Torrington a 3 – 2 lead.

Willette singled to left side of shortstop with one out in the bottom of the fifth. Normally, Pereiras would have his speedy captain steal a base to make things happen but feared Torrington junior catcher Talia Zabarra’s arm and any chance of a Wildcat comeback was extinguished.

We played well on Monday and looked like a great team,” Pereiras said. Today, we took three steps backwards.”
