SEYMOUR – The following information is from the Office of the First Selectwoman’s Facebook page.

At the Sept. 5 Board of Selectperson meeting, First Selectwoman Drugonis and the Board of Selectpersons honored Seymour Police Officers Ismael Herrera, Brandon Devlin and Jason Uliano with Town Proclamations. The Officers were recognized for their actions on the morning of July 12, 2023 in which they were confronted by a suicidal person armed with a knife. Officers spent some time trying to de-escalate the situation

The suicidal armed individual advanced on officers and during this time, officers remained composed.Their communication skills were instrumental in engaging the individual until he could be subdued. While the subject was distracted by Officer Herrera and Officer Devlin, Officer Uliano was able to tactically position himself behind the suicidal male.

Recognizing that de-escalation tactics were not working, Officer Uliano physically subdued the suicidal individual from behind almost certainly saving his life by preventing a deadly use of force situation. While subduing the individual and falling to the ground, Officer Uliano’s finger was cut by the knife. He received medical attention and returned to work a few hours after the incident.

Thanks to the Officers tactical awareness, teamwork and courage, the suicidal male was subdued. The suicidal male was transported the hospital where he received treatment.Officers were also recognized at last month’s Board of Police Commission Meeting where Officer Herrera and Officer Devlin received Letters of Commendation and Officer Uliano was awarded with the Seymour Police Department Distinguished Service Award.
