A tractor trailer truck caused a commotion on Route 34 Wednesday night after driving about four miles with its back end on fire.
The truck’s rear brakes locked up and started smoking while it drove east on Route 34 in Seymour, near the Dunkin Donuts about 7:30 p.m.
By the time it reached Derby, the brakes had caught fire. The truck was pulled over by Bridge Street in downtown Derby, where about a dozen fire fighters were able to quickly put the fire out.
Fire Chief Jim Butler said the fire had travelled from the brakes to the body of the truck, but that none of the cooking oil was ignited.
There were no injuries reported, Butler said. Firefighters were on the scene until about 8:15 p.m.
“It was a quick knock down and extinguishment,” said Fire Chief Jim Butler. “It didn’t take us too long.”
Butler said the truck driver was able to drive the tractor trailer away from the scene to a repair shop.
Several people reported hearing an explosion. However, that was apparently the truck’s tires popping from the heat.
