Training For Barbeque Championships

Sixteen ​“pitmasters” from five states gathered in Seymour March 18 to learn barbeque tips from the pros.

The two-day class was taught by Joe Beland — a national barbeque champ — and Ryan Newstrom — of Big T’z Q Cru. The two have earned 21 Grand Championships and hundreds of other awards in just three years of competing. 

The class focused on the following barbeque details:

  • procurement
  • preparation
  • cooking
  • presentation

Participants cooked with pork, ribs, chicken and brisket. 

The event, which cost $650 per person, was held at Whittemore Ice Cream in Seymour.
