Derby firefighters were called to a put out a large trash fire in a church parking lot Tuesday (June 26) morning.

There were no injuries.

The fire was reported at 11:39 a.m. in the parking lot of St. Jude Church at 71 Pleasant View Road, according to Derby Fire Department Assistant Chief Dave Lenart.

A garbage truck operator was driving and saw that the load was on fire so he went into the parking lot and dumped the load,” Lenart said.

It’s a very common practice in the garbage industry,” Lenart said. It’s a heads-up move by the driver to prevent damage to their equipment.”

About a dozen firefighters from Derby’s volunteer fire companies extended a hose line to bring the blaze under control within about 15 minutes, Lenart said.

The public works department helped out by spreading out the trash pile with a loader to make it easier to extinguish.

Lenart said the trash company would return to clean up the pile from the parking lot.
