DERBY — Two people were sent to the hospital after a tree fell onto their vehicle while traveling on Route 34/Roosevelt Drive Wednesday (June 25).
The extent of their injuries was not released.
The accident happened at 6:35 p.m., according to a Facebook post from Derby Storm Engine/Ambulance Corps and Rescue Co.
The tree caused significant damage to the vehicle and the pair was taken to the trauma center at Yale-New Haven Hospital.
The CT DOT was called to the scene to clean up debris. Route 34 is a state road.
The road was closed for about two hours, according to the social media post.
“It is unfortunate that there were injuries, and we’re hoping CT DOT will continue to assess other trees in the area for potential risks,” the post quoted Storm Ambulance Chief Tom Lenart as saying.
Residents are encouraged to report any trees that appear unstable or damaged by calling Derby Public Works (203 736 1468) or the state of Connecticut Department of Transportation (203 591 3605).
“An investigation is ongoing to determine whether the tree had previously shown signs of distress or decay,” the statement concluded.
