Great Hill Road near North Benham Road in Seymour is closed, while crews clean up damage to utility wires there.
A commercial truck used to haul dumpsters knocked down several wires and became tangled in them when it drove by with the back portion of the truck elevated, according to a press release from Seymour Police Lt. Paul Satkowski.
“The operator of the truck inadvertently forgot to lower the hydraulic boom on the truck (after a delivery of a dumpster) causing the rear end of the truck to remain in the air,” Satkowski said. “This caused the rear-end of the truck to get caught on wires that went across the roadway, thus ripping them down from the utility poles.”
Police came upon the scene during normal rounds about 9 a.m. Friday.
The driver of the truck, Chester Bennett, 56, of Waterbury, was issued a ticket for driving a vehicle with excessive height, which carries a fine of $2,250, Satkowski said.
Although the wires were for phone and television cable for area residents, Satkowski said no service was interrupted as a result of the incident.
He said the cause of the accident was entirely caused by operator error, and there were no injuries from the incident.
Great Hill Road is not expected to be reopened to traffic until the early evening, Satkowski said. Police are redirecting traffic, and drivers are encouraged to use alternate routes until the repairs are complete.
