Two Cats Die In Ansonia Fire

Two cats died during a kitchen fire Monday night at a house on Jewett Street.

The fire was reported at about 8:20 p.m., according to Ansonia Fire Chief Michael Eheman.

An elderly woman was the only person in the house at the time of the fire. She was not injured, but was being examined by emergency medical technicians as a precaution.

The fire appears to have started in the kitchen. The fire marshal’s office is investigating to determine the official cause.

When the crews went into the house, they had heavy smoke showing,” Eheman said.

The fire was contained to the back kitchen. It was put down very quickly. There was no extension up to the second or third floors,” the chief said.

There were no major injuries. The elderly woman is on oxygen to begin with, so she’s in the ambulance for an evaluation,” Eheman said.

Derby’s rapid intervention team was called to the scene, as per Ansonia’s protocol.
