Two People Hospitalized After Derby Crash

Two people were sent to Yale-New Haven Hospital after a two-car crash on Main Street near Water Street Friday night.

Derby Storm Rescue firefighters had to use Hurst tools to cut people out of the wreckage of a four-door sedan which had received heavy damage to the complete passenger’s side.

The two people sent to the hospital in the damaged car did not appear to sustain life-threatening injuries.

The crash was reported at about 10:30 p.m.

Derby Fire Department Assistant Chief Kurt Kemmesies, Jr. said it appeared the car that sustained heavy damage was either coming out of a side street or making a U‑turn when it was struck by an oncoming sedan.

Derby police were on the scene conducting interviews. The two injured people were from the heavily damaged sedan, which was struck so hard it was pushed onto the sidewalk and against a two-story commercial building at 141 Main St.

Damage to the building was minimal. The building houses Break Time at Jak’s (a pool hall) and several other businesses.

The crash happened just west of Water Street. Derby fire police rerouted cars onto side streets to avoid the mess.
