DERBY — The Derby City-Town Clerk advised the campaigns and the public that a recount is scheduled for Sunday on two close races in the city.
The recounts are automatically triggered by state law because the tallies are so close.
Here is the announcement sent on Thursday afternoon:
On behalf of Head Moderator Beth Allaire, you are hereby notified that there is a need for a close vote recanvass from the November 7, 2023, municipal election in the City of Derby for the following offices:
Board of Aldermen/Alderwomen – 1st Ward Only – 9 vote close vote result between Democrat Arthur Newberg 289 and Republican Rich DiCarlo 280.
Board of Apportionment and Taxation – 15 vote close vote result between Republican Isa Simmons-Derby 1262 and Republican Robert Miller, Jr. 1247.
The votes for all candidates for those offices will be recanvassed pursuant to Connecticut General Statutes.
If either of the defeated candidates file a written statement with the Town Clerk waiving this right to a recanvass, then the recanvass will not be held.
The recanvass will take place at 3:00 pm on Sunday November 12, 2023, at Derby City Hall, 1 Elizabeth Street, Derby, CT 06418.
The recanvass will take place pursuant to Section 9 of the Connecticut General Statutes.
