Two Sent To Hospital After Gas Leak & Fire In Seymour

The scene on Maple Street.

SEYMOUR — Two people were sent to Bridgeport Hospital on Tuesday after a reported explosion and fire involving propane gas inside a basement apartment on Maple Street.

Fire, police, and EMS units were called the scene at 1:52 p.m. after a report of a potential explosion, Seymour Police Chief John Bucherati said.

The responding units found three victims. Two were burned seriously, one had minor burns,” Bucherati said. The person with minor burns declined to be taken to the hospital.

Bucherati said there was a gas leak, but the precise cause and origin is being probed by the Seymour Fire Marshal’s Office, state fire officials, and Seymour detectives.

The two victims were taken to the burn unit at Bridgeport Hospital. The extent of their injuries was not available during an afternoon press conference at the scene.

The address was reported as 46 Maple St., but there were three numbers on the multi-family, multi-use building: 42, 44, and 46.

In addition to Seymour first responders, Ansonia EMS and Oxford fire units responded to the scene.
