Two Wrecks, One Fatal, Overnight On Route 8 In Derby

One person is dead after a one-car accident on Route 8 south in Derby overnight.

State police identified the victim Saturday afternoon as Anthony Delbene, 33, of Stratford.

The crash happened at about 2:30 a.m.

The crash involved a 2003 Chevrolet pickup truck that went off the road near exit 17 and hit several trees.

“A single male occupant was pronounced deceased at the scene,” according to an email from state police Sgt. Shane Hassett.

A second serious wreck was reported about 2:50 a.m. Saturday on Route 8 north on the Commodore Hull Bridge.

A car crashed into a tanker truck. The car’s driver was ejected from the vehicle and became trapped underneath. Names were not available as of 9:30 a.m.

Derby Storm Engine Co. responded with Echo Hose from Shelton. 

Crews used air bags and rescue tools to free the car’s driver, who was then taken to Bridgeport Hospital.

State police said the person’s injuries were not life threatening.
