Eagle Scout Rank was presented to Tyler Stankye on April 25 during a Housatonic Council Boy Scout Troop 3 Court of Honor held at the Derby Second Congregational Church.
Tyler D. Stankye is the 15-year-old son of Eagle Scout Charles M. Stankye, III and Susan Stankye.
He is the younger brother of Eagle Scout Charles M. Stankye, IV. He also has 2 sisters, Melissa and April. He resides in Derby with his family.
Tyler joined Cub Scout Pack 3 Derby in 2001 as a Tiger Cub and was an active wolf and bear cub before earning the Webelos badge, Arrow of Light Award and the Light of Christ Religious Award.
Upon joining Troop 3, Tyler was a member of the UPMA (Unprovoked Moose Attack) and Whirling Dervish patrols, serving as Scribe, Assistant Patrol Leader and Patrol leader.
Tyler has earned 43 merit badges and is an active Brotherhood member in Order of the Arrow Paugassett Lodge 553. Tyler has also earned the Ad Altare Dei Catholic religious award and he attends St. Michael’s Church in Derby with his family.
Tyler visited the 2005 National Jamboree in Fort AP Hill, Va. and is serving as Assistant Senior Patrol Leader for Housatonic Council 2010 Jamboree Troop 126 this summer.
Tyler also attended the 2007 World Jamboree in England while traveling through Wales, Ireland, Scotland, and England with Troop 3 and in 2008 he particpated in the troop’s trip to the Florida Sea Base, where they battled hurricane Faye and sailed the Florida Keys aboard the Calypso Gypsy Schooner.
In 2009 Tyler was part of Troop 3’s contingent to camp at the national parks of the South West, including the Grand Canyon.
Tyler has spent many weeks at Edmund D. Strang Scout Reservation summer camp, working on staff in 2009 and he hopes to work there this summer as well.
Tyler also has been selected to represent Troop 3 in Peterborough, England as an exchange scout for 3 weeks this summer.
Tyler’s Eagle project was to create a picnic area on the Derby Greenway. He led a group of scouts to landscape and level an area overlooking the confluence of the Naugatuck and Housatonic rivers, and installed four picnic tables which he and others built. The picnic area is dedicated to the four volunteer fire companies in Derby.
As a third-generation Eagle Scout, Tyler is following in the footsteps of his grandfather, past Housatonic Council BSA President Charles M. Stankye, Jr., his dad Housatonic Council Camping Committee Chairman Charles M. Stankye, III, and his brother Charles M. Stankye, IV.
He is also the nephew of great uncle Eagle Scout Tom Francione and Eagle Scouts uncles Rich and Ron Stankye and cousin Tim Stankye.
Tyler’s grandmother Anne Stankye has been involved with Cub Scout Pack 3 for more than 45 years.
Tyler is the 277th Troop 3 Scout to attain Eagle Rank since the Troop was founded at the Derby Second Congregational Church in 1914.
Tyler is an honor student in his sophomore year at Fairfield College Preparatory School where he is a member of the National Spanish Honor Society, the Knights of Columbus Squires Society and he is on the JV football and rugby teams.
During the Eagle presentation ceremony Tyler received accolades from State Rep. Linda Gentile and Themis Klaridies, State Sen. Joseph Crisco, Shelton Mayor Mark Lauretti and Derby Mayor Anthony Staffieri.
Also on hand for the ceremony were Housatonic Council President Richard Marano and Scout Executive Kevin Bishop.
Troop 3 meets at the Elizabeth Street church on Wednesdays at 7 p.m. and invites all boys at least 11 years of age to join in the adventures of Scouting.
