The Shelton School Readiness Council, in collaboration with the Plumb Memorial Library and the Graustein Memorial Fund, is pleased to announce that it has received a $900 grant from the Valley United Way. The grant was awarded through the United Way’s Special Needs Grant Program and will support the Council’s “Raising Readers” project.
Raising Readers Parents Club is a six-week series of informal parent workshops in which the group learns skills for reading to children, aged 3 to 7 years, and related literacy topics. Each session focuses on a particular topic and includes a free book to add to your home library. Sessions will be held at Plumb Memorial Library from 6 – 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 1st and Thursdays March 10, 17, 24, 31 and April 7th.
Parents should attend all six sessions. Light refreshments will be served and childcare is available, upon request. Space is limited to 10 families. Registration is required by contacting The Children’s Dept. at Plumb Memorial Library at 203 – 924-9461 beginning February 15th.
The Valley United Way’s Special Needs Grants Program provides financial support to area non-profits. The grants are designed to cover items that would not be part of an agency’s normal budget and are earmarked for projects concerning high school graduation, substance abuse, housing/shelter, elder issues, youth and recreation, basic needs and early childhood education.
These grants, offered through a competitive process, have been awarded to over 35 Valley agencies since the program’s inception in 2003, with awards totaling over $215,000.
The mission of the Shelton School Readiness Council is to ensure that all children in Shelton are ready for kindergarten by the time they enter school.
The Council was formed to build greater public awareness about school readiness and to link parents of preschoolers to the educational resources available in Shelton. “We can all make a difference in the lives of Shelton’s young children and be part of starting them off ready for success in school and in life,” said Elspeth Lydon, Co-Chair of the Council and Director of the Plumb Memorial Library. If you would like to learn more or become involved, contact Mrs. Lydon at 203 – 924-1580.
