Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding a head-on crash that sent three people to the hospital Thursday night.
According to an accident report, police are applying for a warrant for 51-year-old Albert Rand, of Oxford, who allegedly crossed the double-yellow line at about 10 p.m. while traveling west on Roosevelt Drive (Route 34).
However, the police report does not specify what type of warrant city police are seeking or what charges are possible.
A call for comment was left with the Derby Police Department.
Rand’s 2008 Chevrolet sedan plowed into the driver’s side of a 2003 Jeep being driven by a 16-year-old Derby girl, according to the accident report.
A second 16-year-old girl was riding in the Jeep. Both escaped with minor injuries, but had to be taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital.
The crash happened near B Street, in the area of Apollo Pizza and the Dew Drop Inn, shortly after the Derby-Shelton fireworks display.
Derby firefighters had to use the jaws of life to cut Rand from his vehicle. He was treated for unspecified injuries at Bridgeport Hospital.
The crash shut the road in both directions for about an hour.
Rand told police that the teen’s Jeep crossed the line and crashed into him, according to the report.
However, the teen, along with a witness who was in another car when the crash happened, said Rand drove into oncoming traffic.
“Operator #1 (Rand) also stated he had two or three beers around 1700 hours today,” the police report states.
