Valley Community Foundation Gives $25,000 To Ansonia Schools

Photo: Ethan FryValley Community Foundation President Sharon Closius dropped by the Ansonia Board of Education meeting Wednesday with a gift — a check for $25,000.

The money will be used to fund the Charger Club After School Program, in which nearly 100 students from Ansonia Middle School, Mead School and Prendergast School participate.

The program had faced a funding shortfall due to an expiring grant, but VCF and its donors did not hesitate to step in, Closius told the school board.

I just wanted to let you know how important the community foundation thinks that this program is to the community and to Ansonia and the kids,” Closius said. I’m just so happy to be able to present this to you.”

Superintendent Carol Merlone said administrators and staff see the program’s dividends all the time — before Wednesday’s board meeting she said she was at the middle school.

We were celebrating the students in the Charger Club on their success on their performance on the mastery tests,” the superintendent said.

Merlone thanked Eileen Ehman, Project Director and Grants Manager for Ansonia Public Schools, and the rest of the staff who took part in applying for the grant and running the club.

If it weren’t for them, we would not be able to get this all done, and if it weren’t for Valley Community Foundation and other organizations, we would not be able to have this for our children,” Merlone said. We do appreciate it, thank you.”
