Valley Community Foundation Grant Buys Books For Shelton Kindergartners

The Shelton School Readiness Council recently received a $500 grant from the Valley Community Foundation to support the purchase of copies of the Miss Bindergarten Gets Ready for Kindergarten” book.

This book will be distributed to all incoming kindergarten students in Shelton during the Council’s Kick Off to Kindergarten event scheduled in January 2010.

Kindergarten registration will be conducted by the Shelton Public Schools and will take place at local elementary schools during the week of January 25th. Details will follow in area newspapers, billboards and signs
throughout the city.

This new funding from the Valley Community Foundation will enable the Shelton School Readiness Council to initiate this new literacy project,” said Elspeth Lydon, Chair of the Shelton School Readiness Council.
This generous grant will enable the Readiness Council to give hundreds of Shelton children their very own Miss Bindergarten Gets Ready for Kindergarten’ book. In addition, the book will help children and their families ease the transition into kindergarten.”

This grant was one of 30 awards totaling $136,143 that was presented by the Valley Community Foundation (VCF).

The Foundation carries out the mission of The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven in the cities and towns of Ansonia, Derby, Shelton, Seymour, and Oxford. The VCF is dedicated to making the Valley a better place to live and work by increasing philanthropy, especially permanent endowments; connecting donors to needs and opportunities; and providing leadership on critical community issues.

As a result of this new community project, the Shelton Library System will be donating bookmarks to accompany each book.

The mission of the Shelton School Readiness Council is to ensure that all children in Shelton are ready for kindergarten by the time they enter elementary
school.

The Council was formed to build greater public awareness about school readiness skills and to link parents or preschoolers aged 3 and 4 and younger to the educational resources available in Shelton.
