Valley Survey Finds Worship Happening Online And In Person

The following is a press release from the Valley Interfaith Council:

Valley Interfaith Council surveyed our members to discover how our faith communities are faring as we enter month seven of the COVID-19 pandemic. We have discovered that about half of our respondents are holding services virtually, while the rest are worshipping in person with recommended precautions such as masks, temperature taking, and social distancing.

Our member Houses of Worship who are streaming their services are using a mix of social media platforms. While half are relying on Facebook, the other half are using Zoom, Youtube, and conference calling in equal measures. Respondents commented favorably about providing virtual services, saying that offering streaming services helped protect the vulnerable elderly, sick, and others at particular risk for severe COVID19 infection. Concern was expressed for those with cognitive disabilities who might find social distancing mandates such as no hugging hard to understand.

When identifying greater needs that have cropped up during COVID19, the primary increased need identified was providing food for the hungry. The majority of respondents said they were starting food missions for the hungry or expanding that which was already in place. It is clear that the pandemic is increasing the need to address food insecurity in our communities. Some of our members are also delivering gently used clothing to those in need. More than one member identified a need for coordination among VIFC member organizations to better serve the needs of the community. That the need is so great is highlighted by oine respondent’s call for the call for longer and more sustained conversations with other community leaders about economic relief and food relief for the Valley.”

Finally, as always, our member faith organizations work to comfort the grieving in their communities, as COVID19 has left holes in families. We pray for each other during this time and all times to come.
