SHELTON — In a time of growing uncertainty around federal funding and safety-net services, Valley United Way invites nonprofit leaders across Ansonia, Derby, Oxford, Seymour, and Shelton to attend a vital conversation at its Annual Meeting and Dinner on Wednesday, June 26, 2025, at 5:00 PM at the Courtyard Marriott in Shelton.
The event will feature a keynote address by Andrea Barton Reeves, Commissioner of the Connecticut Department of Social Services — one of the most dynamic voices in statewide systems transformation. Known for her insight, candor, and leadership, Commissioner Barton Reeves will speak directly to the challenges and opportunities nonprofits are facing amid a shifting federal landscape.
Why Should Nonprofits Attend?
Federal changes are already rippling down to the local level, potentially reducing services traditionally provided by nonprofits. This is especially concerning for organizations serving ALICE families — those who are Asset-Limited, Income-Constrained, and Employed. Commissioner Barton Reeves will address the uncertainty head-on, and explore:
- How Valley nonprofits can prepare for and respond to federal and state-level changes
- The importance of adaptability and collaboration in serving vulnerable populations
- The lived experience of poverty as a constant state of uncertainty — and what that means for service providers
- What nonprofit leaders should be thinking about now to stay resilient in the months ahead
This is a rare opportunity to hear from a state leader who deeply understands the nonprofit sector and is committed to making services more equitable, accessible, and responsive. In her career, Commissioner Barton Reeves has led groundbreaking initiatives — from launching Connecticut’s Paid Family and Medical Leave program to advocating for children and families in court and in community-based care.
Tickets are $70 and include dinner. Reserve your seat at valleyunitedway.org/annualmeeting.
