Firefighters were on the shores of the Housatonic for several hours overnight trying to fish out a vehicle that was dumped in the river.
Luckily, no one was in the car.
Assistant Fire Chief Nick Verdicchio said a couple enjoying a cup of coffee at the Sunnyside boat launch off Route 110 spotted the back end of a vehicle in the water at about 11 p.m. Monday.
The car was submerged when firefighters arrived.
“By the time we got there, we couldn’t see anything,” Verdicchio said.
Conditions in the water were just as bleak. “It was dark and that water is murky,” he said.
In addition to Shelton fire crews, the police department’s dive team was called to the scene, as was a dive team from Milford. A Derby rescue crew was sent to the scene as well.
Shelton EMS responded, as did a boat from Sikorsky Aircraft.
“We proceeded to comb the river,” Verdicchio said.
The vehicle was found at about 1 a.m. roughly 25 feet down the river from where the couple first saw it.
It was pulled out between 3:30 a.m. and 4 a.m.
The vehicle, possibly a Cadillac, may have been stolen.
Police are investigating.
