Veterans Day Observances In The Valley

Veterans Day is Friday, Nov. 11. The following is a list of local observances.

We’ll update with info from Oxford as soon as we can.

ANSONIA

A Veterans Day observance is planned for 11 a.m. Friday Nov. 11 at Veterans Park next to Ansonia City Hall, 253 Main St.

The guest speaker is World War II veteran Jack Granatie, a member of American Legion Post 50.

Mayor David Cassetti will present a proclamation, and Veterans Day essays will be read by students from Ansonia schools.

BEACON FALLS

A Veterans Day observation is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 11 at Matthies Park.

American Legion Post 25 is organizing the event. 

Matthies Park is at 215 Pines Bridge Road.

DERBY

There will be an observation of Veterans Day on Friday Nov. 11, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. on the Derby Green. 

This will be hosted by the John H. Collins American Legion Post 24 of Derby. 

The guest speaker will be John A. Coppola, local veteran and educator. 

Refreshments will be served after the ceremony at the Veterans Memorial, corner of Seymour Avenue and Atwater Avenue, Derby. 

All veterans and the public, are invited and encouraged to attend. 

SEYMOUR
At 9:30 a.m. American Legion Emil Senger Post 10 will conduct services on the Bank Street bridge by casting a wreath honoring Navy veterans lost at sea.

At 11 A.M. Post 10 will commence services (11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month ) marking Veterans Day at French Memorial Park, 74 Spruce St.

Separately, the Veterans of Foreign Wars will be holding a candlelight service starting at 7 p.m. at the Broad Street Park. Light refreshments will be served at the conclusion of the ceremony at the community center.

SHELTON

Sutter-Terlizzi Post 16 will conduct Veterans Day services at The River Walk in Shelton. 

To mark Veterans Day in Shelton, Post 16 will conduct their annual Veterans Day Program on Friday Nov. 11. 

Ceremonies will begin 10:30 a.m. at The Veterans’ Memorial on The Shelton Riverwalk followed by an 11:30 service and luncheon at Post 16 on Bridgeport Ave. 

The American Legion is the nation’s largest wartime veterans organization. 

Founded early in 1919, the delegates to the first National Convention in Minneapolis broke from business sessions to parade down a main street in a heavy snowstorm at 11 a.m. Nov. 11 to mark the anniversary of the armistice.

The Four Pillars of the American Legion are Veterans Affairs & Rehabilitation, National Security, Americanism, and Children & Youth. 

Each of these pillars encompasses a variety of programs that benefit our nation’s veterans, its service members, their families, the youth of America and ordinary citizens. 

These programs make a difference in hundreds of thousands of lives each year and many here in Shelton. 

In Shelton, American Legion Post 16 sponsors American Legion Baseball which is one of the nation’s most successful amateur athletic programs, educating young people about the importance of sportsmanship, citizenship and fitness. 

The Post also supports Operation Comfort Warriors program supports recovering wounded warriors and their families, providing them with comfort items” and the kind of support that makes a hospital feel a little bit more like home. 

Post 16 raises money to send sixteen Shelton High School Juniors to Boys State, where they learn the mechanics of the state government by role-playing in a complex dual-party system. The American Legion Auxiliary conducts parallel programs for young women through Girls State. 

The Post also holds a Veterans Resource Fair each spring, host a Kids Walk to benefit the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center as well as many other local patriotic programs. 

American Legion Post 16 of Shelton strives to be is a hub for patriotic programs, youth activities, and veterans helping veterans and new members are always welcome.
