Victim From Derby Shooting Alive, But In Critical Condition

The crime scene in Derby Saturday night.

DERBY — A 25-year-old man shot multiple times Saturday night on Eighth Street is in critical condition, police said.

Police have yet to interview the man due to his injuries, Lt. Justin Stanko said in email Monday.

The man was shot on the sidewalk on Eighth Street between Hawthorne Avenue and Smith Street at about 9 p.m. Saturday. Click here for a previous story.

He was shot at close range. Residents reported a dark-colored BMW-type SUV leaving the scene immediately after the shooting.

Stanko said the vehicle is connected to the shooting and that police have interviewed the driver. No criminal charges have been filed as police continue to investigate.

That investigation include watching footage from several exterior home-security cameras that were in operation at the time of the shooting.

That footage is helping the investigation, Stanko wrote in an email.

Police said Saturday night the incident was not random, but a targeted act of violence. On Monday police described the shooting as drug related, most likely.

All signs of the investigation point to this being drug-related; to wit, a drug deal gone bad,” Stanko said.

The victim is from the lower Naugatuck Valley.
