The Naugatuck Valley Health District reported 10 more COVID-19 associated deaths Wednesday. All 10 people were residents of nursing homes or assisted living facilities.
Six lived in a Seymour facility, four lived in facilities in Shelton.
As of Wednesday, there were 64 COVID-19 associated deaths locally. That total includes 52 deaths in Shelton, 11 in Seymour, and one death in Derby.
Seymour’s death toll doubled between April 14 and April 15, but the health district noted there is a lag between when deaths happen and when they are reported to the health district.
“The deaths reported to NVHD today occurred within the last week, not necessarily since the last NVHD,” the health district’s Wednesday night message to the public noted.
The COVID-19 virus is taking an awful toll on local nursing homes and assisted living facilities. The majority of lower Naugatuck Valley deaths are happening inside nursing homes and similar facilities.
Facilities with COVID-19 positive residents include Shady Knoll in Seymour, along with Shelton Lakes Apple Rehab, Bishop-Wicke Health and Rehabilitation, and Gardner Heights Health Care Center in Shelton.
Meanwhile, a nursing home association is warning that facilities are on the brink of financial disaster because of the virus, The CT Mirror reported.

“According to industry officials and the Department of Public Health, about half of Connecticut’s nursing homes have at least one COVID-19-positive resident. Neither the state nor the industry has disclosed how many residents at each facility have been infected.”
Of the 657 positive COVID-19 tests in the lower Naugatuck Valley, 189 are people in nursing homes, assisted living facilities, group homes or other similar settings, according to the NVHD. That represents 29 percent of all positive tests.
According to Johns Hopkins University, 26,700 people have died from COVID-19 in the U.S. About 47,700 people have recovered.
