The town will be using donated money to put up three “Welcome to Oxford” signs.
Earlier this summer, First Selectman Mary Ann Drayton- Rogers started a sign campaign in hopes to welcome residents and visitors to the community.
Drayton- Rogers said the two-sided signs with gold lettering will be placed at the town borders welcoming visitors to town on one side and saying “thank you for visiting” on the other.
The signs will also have the town seal and the name of the organization that sponsored it.
“This is to work toward a feeling of community not only for our residents, but for visitors to feel that we are a welcoming community,” she said.
The initiative has already went out to bid, and was awarded to R Way Signs of Oxford.
Drayton-Rogers said sponsorship for each sign would cost organizations $1,390.
So far, the town has received sponsorship from the Oxford High School Booster Club, Oxford PTO and the Oxford Land Trust for three signs.
Two of the signs will be located at the intersection of Great Hill Road and Route 67, and another at the intersection of Route 188 and Rockhouse Hill.
Drayton-Rogers hopes more groups will give money to sponsor the signs.
Drayton-Rogers, a Democrat, is being challenged for First Selectman by David Haversat.
Haversat supports the initiative.
“It is a good thing for the community because it shows activity,” he said. “I would like to see an number of groups that are instrumental to the town be involved.”
However, Haversat said with election season is in full swing, Drayton-Rogers has been “loading up” on photo opportunities.
“These are things that make news and of course it is very obvious,” he said.
Other spots targeted for signs include Roosevelt Drive at Stevenson Dam, Route 67 near the Southbury town line, Quaker Farms Road heading north from Seymour and Chestnut Tree Hill coming from Beacon Falls.
