ANSONIA Police took a suspect into custody Tuesday after he assaulted and robbed an elderly man before leading cops on a high-speed chase.

The suspect, who had not been formally charged as of 12:45 p.m., ditched a stolen vehicle, then ran through the Big Y parking lot frantically trying to steal another car.

The suspect was eventually caught after a foot chase that ended on Chestnut Street next to Road Ready Used Cars about 12:20 p.m.

Lt. Patrick Lynch said police were first notified after the suspect entered the home of a Clark Street man in his 80s who had his front door open and demanded his car keys.

When the man refused, the suspect shoved him, grabbed the man’s keys and wallet and stole the vehicle, a Nissan Altima, driving to Woodlawn Avenue, Lynch said.

The victim was not seriously injured, Lynch said.

A sergeant then spotted the suspect on Woodlawn Avenue, and began a pursuit that went from Woodlawn Avenue to Colony Road and then North Main Street.

Lynch said cops broke off the chase after the suspect did 75 miles per hour on North Main Street.

The suspect was last seen in the area of Tremont Street before police received several 911 calls reporting he was trying to break into cars in the parking lot of Big Y on Main Street.

He dumped the car somewhere around here and then was walking through the lot trying to break into cars,” Lynch said.

Police caught him on Chestnut Street after he ran across Main Street and through the parking lot of Road Ready Used Cars.

The suspect was not immediately identified. Lynch said police would release more information once they determine the specific charges to lodge against the suspect.
