A fast-moving thunderstorm has knocked out power to slightly more than 1,000 United Illuminating customers in Shelton.
The storm rolled through the area at about 2:15 p.m.
A lightening strike triggered a fire alarm at Emmett O’Brien Technical High School on Prindle Avenue in Ansonia.
Manhasset Trail in Shelton was particularly hard hit. The road was closed shortly after 3 p.m., police said.
Park Avenue in Shelton was also closed off between Astoria Lane and Willoughby Road because of a fallen tree and downed utility wires. It was unclear when the road would reopen.
A large tree fell across the road, making passage impossible.
As of 3:30 p.m., 1,029 United Illuminating customers were without electricity in Shelton. That’s about 6 percent of all UI customers in Shelton.
A tornado warning was in effect until 2:45 p.m.
The Valley made out it relatively unscathed compared to Bridgeport, where there was a report of a collapsed building.
The Valley is under a severe thunderstorm watch until 8 p.m., according to the National Weather Service.
A number of Shelton firefighters and EMS personnel were sent to help Bridgeport deal with its damage.
