Wild Weather Keeps Valley Emergency Crews Busy

Torrential rain Wednesday night caused a brook to burst in Seymour, sent Derby firefighters on a seemingly endless number of water emergencies” and upended trees in Ansonia.

The National Weather Service posted a small stream flood advisory until 4 a.m. Thursday.

A flood watch for the region was scheduled to expire at 6 a.m. Thursday.

The rain Wednesday evening was intense and quickly overtook catch basins.

Readers on the Valley Indy Facebook page reported Wakelee Avenue in Ansonia was flooded, along with Hollbrook Road on the Oxford-Seymour border.

Because of the rain, trees were uprooted. There was flooding across the road,” said Seymour First Selectman Paul Roy.

Riggs Street in Oxford was flooded, as was parts of Route 67.

Flooding was reported throughout the Beaver Brook Apartments in Ansonia.

Ansonia volunteer firefighters spent about two hours at the apartment complex pumping out 15 inches to 2 feet of water from one building’s basement, according to Fire Chief Ron Burgess Sr.

Burgess said the firefighters got the water levels down, and the apartment complex’s facilities team will continue cleaning up today.

Also in Seymour, machines from the Department of Public Works were brought in to deal with a swollen brook that had engulfed Walnut Street.
