Wind Gusts Knock Down Trees, Power Lines

Wednesday afternoon is turning out to be a very busy day for emergency workers and area public work crews.

As of 1:30 p.m., there were numerous reports of trees and wires down in Ansonia, Derby, Oxford, Seymour and Shelton.

Roughly 2,300 houses were without electricity, according to information from the United Illuminating Co. and Connecticut Light & Power.

The number included:

  • 1,226 UI customers in Shelton
  • 515 CL&P customers in Oxford
  • 502 CL&P customers in Seymour
  • 71 UI customers in Ansonia

A National Weather Service wind advisory remains posted until 12 a.m.

Wind gusts today are expected to reach 50 miles an hour, leaving rain-soaked tree limbs vulnerable.

A 28 mph wind gust was recorded at Oxford Airport this afternoon.

The first incident was reported at about 11:30 a.m., when tree limbs fell on a car on Columbia Street near Main Street in Ansonia. No one was in the car at the time of the accident.

Fallen tree limb reports have been streaming in since then, including:

  • Glen Street in Ansonia
  • Squantuck Road in Seymour
  • North Main Street in Ansonia
  • North Street in Shelton
  • Mountain Road in Oxford
  • Hogs Back Road in Oxford
