Wind Storm Whips Through Region

As wind gusts in the New Haven topped 60 mph, tree limbs began falling and knocking out power throughout the lower Valley Thursday morning.

Here is a running tally of calls being handled by local fire, police and EMS (Valley Indy Facebook readers have been keeping track in various threads on our Facebook page):

3:56 a.m. Wind howling, rain falling sideways, but just 34 customers out in the lower Valley, all in Oxford.

4 a.m. (about) East Village Road, Shelton. Wires down.

4:17 a.m. 393 North Main St, Ansonia. Tree on house.

4:17 a.m. 224 Riverview Ave., Shelton. Tree into wires.

4:27 a.m. United Illuminating reports 39 customers in Shelton without electricity.

4:36 a.m. Platt Road, Shelton. Tree into wires. Shelton fire then reported a pole had fallen and a car drove into the downed wires.

4:39 a.m. Intersection of Long Hill and River Road, Shelton. Electrical fire reported in street lamp outside Cumberland Farms.

4:40 a.m. 170 Isinglass Road, Shelton. Transformer fire.

4:41 a.m. United Illuminating reports 246 customers without electricity in Shelton.

4:46 a.m. CL&P reports seven customers in Seymour without power.

4:51 a.m. CL&P outage map shows 123 customers in Oxford without power.

4:52 a.m. 41 Wesley Drive, Shelton. Fire alarm sounding.

4:59 a.m. Bowers Hill Road, Oxford. Tree down.

5:02 a.m. Birdseye Road, Shelton. Tree down.

5:09 a.m. East Village Road, Shelton. Transformer fire reported.

5:20 A.M. More than 600 without power in Seymour.

5:20 a.m. Partial ceiling collapse reported in 30-unit apartment building at 45 Minerva St. in Derby.

Wind gusts blew tar paper and damaged vents on the apartment building’s roof, allowing water to cascade into the building’s third floor.

Initial 911 calls reported sparks coming from electrical outlets.

No injuries were reported.

Derby firefighters used a ladder truck to inspect the damage on the roof. As of 6 a.m., they were waiting for a building inspector, the property owner and the Red Cross to arrive at the scene.

6 a.m. High wind warning expires.

6:44 a.m.

Ansonia: 2 (although it appeared to be a much larger number along North Main Street at 6 a.m.)

Seymour: 747

Shelton: 541

6:58 a.m. United Illuminating posts on Twitter: “UI service area began seeing storm impact at about 4am.The damage is primarily and almost exclusively tree related. All UI crews are working.”
