DERBY — An elderly woman was taken to Bridgeport Hospital after she was burned during a fire in her apartment.

The Derby Fire Department was sent to the Lakeview Apartments, a senior housing complex, at 12:06 a.m. for a possible structure fire.

A fire captain entered a second-floor apartment and saw a small fire inside a unit. He found the woman in the kitchen, and escorted her out of the apartment.

The woman suffered burns, firefighters said. She was alert and talking to medics as they wheeled her on a stretcher to an ambulance.

Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire, which was limited to the one apartment. Emergency management personnel were on scene to see if the downstairs neighbors needed
temporary housing, as the power was off and water used to extinguish the flames may have flowed downstairs.

Derby Fire Marshal Phil Hawks is investigating the cause and origin of the fire.

Derby Assistant Fire Chief David Lenart said it appeared the fire may have started in the living room area. He estimated about 40 firefighters responded to the scene, including
firefighters from Shelton.

The Lakeview Apartments are off Lakeview Terrace, which is off Route 34/Roosevelt Drive.
