Yankee Gas Project Starts In Derby

A massive Yankee Gas project kicked off Monday morning on Derby’s Hawthorne Avenue.

The utility company is spending the next three months replacing gas mains and service lines along a mile stretch of Hawthorne Avenue and surrounding streets.

The work started at the intersection of Hawthorne and Sixth Street Monday morning. It will continue all the way up Hawthorne to Cullens Hill Road.

The work, according to Yankee Gas, will encompass:

  • Hawthorne Avenue
  • Laurel Place
  • E Street
  • Grove Avenue
  • Talmadge Street
  • Stygar Terrace
  • Cedric Avenue
  • Chatfield Street
  • Coppola Terrace
  • Evelyn Road
  • Woodycrest Street
  • Seventh Avenue

The Derby project is part of a larger, multi-million dollar initiative to upgrade and replace underground equipment all over the state, according to Ashley Duncan, a Yankee Gas spokesperson.

The utility company sent letters recently to residents advising them the work was coming within the next few months.

The work requires the utility company to dig along the side of the road. They try to keep the road open to traffic, Duncan said.

The project will also be replacing service lines that connect homes and businesses to the gas main on the street.

We’ll be working with customers and business owners on a one-to-one basis to schedule that work at a time that is convenient to them. That is all handled on a case-by-case basis,” Duncan said.

Derby Is Also Rebuilding Hawthorne Avenue

The Yankee Gas project is happening in advance of a city project to pave and rebuild Hawthorne Avenue.

Ron Culmo, director of the Derby Public Works Department, said the city contacted utility companies requesting that any upgrades to their underground equipment be done sooner rather than later.

We don’t want to do the project then have utilities come in and tear up the new road,” Culmo said.

Yankee Gas will put a temporary patch on there and then (a contractor) will come in, grind up the road and rebuild it,” he said.

A start date for the city road reconstruction hasn’t been set yet.
