As expected, David Yish and his running mate Lila Ferrillo filed paperwork formally requesting a primary to see who will be on the Republican line in this November’s election.
Yish wants to be First Selectman. Ferrillo’s looking for a seat on the Board of Selectmen.
Yish, a current member of the Board of Selectmen, and Ferrillo, a member of the Board of Finance, lost a caucus this week to fellow Republicans George Temple and Jeff Haney.
Yish and Ferrillo had walked into that caucus with the backing of the Republican Town Committee, even though the pair never announced their campaign prior the being endorsed by the the Republican Town Committee at a meeting July 14.
In a prepared statement issued Friday, Yish notes he almost won the nomination outright earlier this week despite just four days of campaigning.
Temple, the other First Selectman candidate, said Friday the news did not come as a surprise.
“I’m sure we’ll be ready for it,” Temple said.
Asked if he believes he will draw more support in a primary than Yish, as he did the caucus, Temple said: “I’m not in it to lose.”
Temple remarked how it took Yish “a long time” to make up his mind as to whether to run for First Selectman.
“We’re ready for it,” Temple said.
