Young Artists In Oxford Art Exhibit

The Oxford Cultural Arts Commission announces the April Gallery of Art exhibit featuring the works of three New Young Artists.

The exhibit will be available for viewing at meeting room of Oxford Town Hall, 486 Oxford Road, through April 28 during business hours, Monday to Thursday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Beth Ludwig is presently a student at Paier College of Art in Hamden Connecticut where she majors in photography. She has a passion for travel, and plans to travel around the world using her photography to document what she sees. Currently Beth is documenting the activities of local bands and musical groups. She says, In my work I seek to express the energy of the music these groups play”. Although the number of pieces of art exhibited here is small she is very happy to have the opportunity to show her photographs and some school art projects.

Kathleen Mifflin, a senior at Oxford High School, began this school this year knowing that she had to complete the mandatory senior project, also known to Oxford High School students as Capstone. She turned for help to the Oxford Cultural Arts Commission’s mentoring program and was introduced to Jim Warner Oxford Green’s Camera Club President, who agreed to be Kathleen’s Mentor. The resulting photos were recently exhibited at Oxford High School in conjunction with the school’s showing of West Side Story and at the end of the Play’s run will be part of this month’s New Young Artist” exhibit. Prints of Kathleen’s photos will be for sale at the exhibit and the proceeds will go to support the arts programs at Oxford High School.

Emi Smith is pleased with the response to her art. She won a silver key for drawing in the Scholastic competition this year, and was one of the two students in her high school to be awarded with the 2011 CAS award for visual arts. In her work, she seeks to express her own inner dialogues and emotions, but she tries to offer a certain level of ambiguity: each piece is meant to be open to multiple interpretations. Emi gravitates towards the use of charcoal, graphite, and colored pencil, coupled with found objects such as beads, feathers, and vintage text that she finds inspiring or beautiful.

Oxford Cultural Arts Commission encourages within the Town of Oxford, CT participation in, and promotion, development, acceptance and appreciation of artistic and cultural activities.
