SEYMOUR – The town’s planning and zoning commission has from now until May to decide whether to change the zoning on three Pearl Street properties from residential to multi-family.
If the commissioners say yes, a developer could propose the construction of about 108 apartments on the land.
The commission held its final public hearing on the zone change on March 14. The majority of the speakers asked the commissioners to vote no.
They said 100 apartments – with accompanying motor vehicles – is too much development for an already densely-populated neighborhood where many houses sit on less than half an acre.
SEYMOUR — The property that housed the former Seymour Lumber & Supply Co. at the corner of Route 67 and Bank Street has sold for $575,000.
The new owner is Adib Chouiki of Bank Street, LLC, in Norwalk. According to town land records, the one-acre site has an appraised value of $202,100. Chouiki owns several gas stations, including a Sunoco Gas station in Norwalk.
ANSONIA — One person was sent to the hospital after a house fire on Belleview Terrace on Friday evening (March 15).
The extent of the man’s injuries were not known, but Ansonia Fire Department Assistant Chief Anthony DeLucia said he was taken to Griffin Hospital for an evaluation.
The Ansonia Fire Department received a report of a house fire at 5:35 p.m. Derby and Seymour were called to the scene, in addition to EMS, police and fire police.
The first units on scene saw heavy smoke coming out the front of the single-family, ranch-style dwelling. Everyone in the house was able to get out, DeLucia said.
Firefighters entered the house and discovered a fire in a bedroom. It was quickly extinguished. Firefighters checked to see if the fire had spread beyond the bedroom, but it had not.
The fire marshal’s office is investigating the cause and origin.
DeLucia said the house is uninhabitable. The Connecticut Red Cross responded to the scene to help the residents.
In Derby, city government could use the cash infusion to make its redevelopment zone between Main Street and the Housatonic River more attractive to developers – a goal for decades.
The Derby redevelopment zone is within a transit hub.
